Playstands Needed
Waldorf Park in Arlington needs playstands. If you have one or two at home that are no longer needed, please consider donating them for use by the little ones in our drop-in program.  You may email Lucy about donations, or leave a message for Lucy with Marilyn or Kirsten. Thank you.

Happy Chinese New Year!
The Year of the Rabbit begins on Thursday, February 3, and is also known by its formal name of Xin Mao.  Unlike the Gregorian Calendar (from where we get our year 2011), which was put into use in 1582, the Chinese Calendar was perfected around 500 BC.  It is a lunisolar calendar, which incorporates elements of a lunar calendar with a solar calendar.  Each month follows one cycle of the moon.  Each year is represented by one of twelve animals, and this year is the Year of the Rabbit.  People born in the year of the rabbit are typically said to be sociable, friendly, and loving, valuing family and friends.
The third grade at our school usually learns about the Chinese Calendar as part of their Main Lesson and helps the whole school celebrate the Chinese New Year--usually involving a dragon!
Annual Giving Ends Tomorrow--We Need Your Help!
This is it. Our Annual Giving Campaign drive closes out as promised on January 31--tomorrow!
  • We can do it! At 90% participation among current families we'll receive a $20,000 gift. Participation currently stands at 81%. If you haven’t already given, you can help get us to the goal. Click "read more" above to see the latest figures on schoolwide participation percentage.
  • There is still an additional $30,000 in matching funds available for all new gifts, or gifts of an increased amount versus last year. This dollar-for-dollar match will double the value of your gift: for example, if you make a new gift of $100, or increase over last year’s gift by that amount, our generous anonymous donor will match with a $100 donation.

If you haven't done so, please make your pledge today. You may take until June 30 to pay your pledge. Use the buttons below to make on online pledge or donation, stop by the school and pick up an annual giving envelope, or simply call the business office with your pledge.

Our community is strong because of the gifts we all give each other. Your help is important, meaningful, and appreciated.

Thank you,
Keith Hartt, First Grade Parent
Rhythms of Time in Learning and Teaching: The Waldorf Approach
Parents are invited join us on Thursday, February 3 at 7 p.m. for a talk by Georg Locher, an international consultant and master teacher of Waldorf education.  The discussion will focus on how both adults and children these days struggle in the grip of quantified time. Time can exhaust and wound, and time can heal.  This talk aims to show how consciously working with qualitative rhythms of time can support and strengthen children in their developmental and educational processes, both at school and at home.  The child's changing need for order, form and discipline as means for social and moral education will also be illuminated in this deeper context.
Second Annual International Potluck
Our Second Annual International Potluck will be happening soon, on Saturday, February 12 from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. in the school auditorium.  It was a lot of fun last year and we hope you can make it!  If you are interested in volunteering for the event or have questions or comments related to it, contact the PCA, Maju Brunette, or Mary Ross.  Sign up to bring an interesting international dish--there will be sign-up sheets in the Adams Building and at 703 Mass Ave beginning on Tuesday, February 1.  Please join us!
Gala Spotlight
Maple Sugaring or Harvest Weekend at Camp Glen Brook
Located in bucolic Marlborough, NH, Camp Glen Brook offers you the opportunity to experience the peace of living in harmony with the natural world.  Glen Brook has been an idyllic, Waldorf-inspired summer camp for 75 lucky children every year since 1946. Join them for either a maple sugaring or harvest weekend. Lodging in rustic cabins and all meals from Friday dinner to Sunday lunch are included.

And in the silent auction...

Nanotechnology and Waldorf
Andrew Linnell’s talk, “The Invisible Technology: Will Nanotechnology Transcend Biology?” at Waldorf High School of Massachusetts Bay, was rescheduled for a second time due to weather. It will be held on Tuesday, February 1 at 7:30 p.m.  Come with your questions and insights to join computer scientist Andrew Linnell, who will explore the topic of whether Waldorf graduates be better equipped to deal with the challenges of this next decade’s fast-changing existence, with emphasis on the promises of nanotechnology.  Please click "read more" above for more details.
