Main Lesson Books |
|
|
|
One of the elements that differentiates Waldorf education from other schools is the fact that we do not use textbooks. Rather than expecting the students to memorize and regurgitate information that has been prepackaged for them, teachers bring fresh material that they themselves have researched and learned. The approach to science is hands-on, phenomenologically based, and rooted in observation and experience. History is brought alive through a combination of myth, story, and biography, making the people and events alive for the students in a way which reading it in a textbook cannot.
Out of this rich experience students create beautiful books detailing the concepts, stories, and experiments from their Main Lesson blocks. Students record and illustrate the many subjects and lessons they have worked on throughout the year, making their learning personal and lasting. At this time of year, students are beginning to organize these Main Lesson books, sewing them together, and putting on the covers. By the last day of school, every student will have a rich and unique record of his or her year to take home and keep. |

All Library Books Due Friday |

 The year is quickly drawing to a close, and the Waldorf School elementary student library is hoping to collect all the books that have been borrowed by students before we leave for the summer. Please check under beds, on shelves, and in cars for stray library books--we would like all books to be returned by this coming Friday, June 3. Any books that have been lost must be replaced; we will contact parents if books are missing. Thank you for your help in making sure our library collection remains complete! |

Did You Miss the Outside Donation Drop-Off? |

|
We'll be having outside drop-off for the PCA Waldorf Boutique again in the fall, probably more than once! Also, boxes are still across from the Café and in the Nursery building, and the PCA Waldorf Boutique appreciates every donation of gently used clothing and Waldorf-type toys. If you'd like to arrange for a special pick-up (in the parking lot, or at your home), contact Taryn. |

Third Kindergarten Opening Next Year |

|
 Due to increased demand for enrollment in our kindergarten program, the school will be adding a third kindergarten in the 2011-12 academic year. The hiring process for a kindergarten teacher and kindergarten assistant are underway. We are very excited by the growth in our kindergarten program, and we hope parents and friends of the school will spread the word. Please click "read more" above for more information. Importance of Play in Education |

You may be interested in reading a piece from CNN entitled Want to get your kids into college? Let them play. It states: “…The beauty of a play-based curriculum is that very young children can routinely observe and learn from others' emotions and experiences. Skills-based curricula, on the other hand, are sometimes derisively known as "drill and kill" programs because most teachers understand that young children can't learn meaningfully in the social isolation required for such an approach.” |
