Pizza Lunch Message from the 8th Grade
Oops! There is a mistake on the pizza forms. We inadvertantly included Friday, November 12 on the form, forgetting that this was a parent-teacher conference day when school will not be in session. If you ordered for that day and would like a refund, please write a note with you child's name and grade and put it in the Main Office in the envelope for completed pizza forms. Thank you, and please accept our apologies!

Practicing Spanish on Location
When our students learn foreign languages, they are not just learning vocabulary, but are immersed in the culture of the countries from where these languages originated.  They get the feel and the taste of the language as it is used in a broad context through song, dance, and food.  They engage more than just their intellects--their bodies and their senses are involved in the learning process, allowing them to take in the subject matter more deeply.

For a literal taste of Latino culture, last week the Sixth Grade journeyed to Boston to enjoy some delicious authentic Columbian food with Señora Rios.

Food is our common ground, a universal experience.
-James Beard
Gala Spotlight
A School Year of Pies!
Sit down every month of the school year to a homemade pie baked fresh for you by kindergarten teacher Wendy Margo. She'll make several of her most delicious favorites, and bake to order, too. Don't miss the chance to bid on this sweet treat at the Gala Benefit on Saturday, March 12.

And in the silent auction:
Two tickets to the fabulous Concord Youth Theatre!

Annual Giving: Why We're at Waldorf
As the school asks for our support in Annual Giving, I have been reflecting on why we are here and what the school means to our family. Below are just a few reasons from a very long list. What's your list? I hope you will take a moment to think about the gifts large and small that the school gives to your family...and then please give as you are inspired and able to do so. The Board match ends next week on Sunday, October 31--don't miss the chance to double your gift.

We love Waldorf because...
1. Every day at school a child holds a door for me.
2. Where else do children recite verses together, memorize poetry, and dance gracefully to live piano music?
3. Ruby and her friends play for hours with sticks, leaves, and dirt -- not an outlet, gizmo, or even a toy in sight.
4. She's knitting me a cabled sweater for my birthday.
(OK, not exactly...but someday she will!)

I hope you'll share your reasons...email Megan, or stop by the "Wall of Reasons" in the Cafe.

Thank you,
Laurel Kayne
2nd grade parent and member of the development committee

Halloween Assembly on Friday
Our annual Halloween Assembly for the students will be during the last period on Friday, October 29.  Elementary students in grades 2-8 are invited to bring a jack-o'-lantern with a candle to school that day. The assembly will feature a story, a eurythmy performance by the Eighth Grade, and songs for the season.
You may drop off your pumpkins in the auditorium when you arrive in the morning; the seventh and eighth graders will redistribute them to the children at dismissal time, so please remember to label your pumpkin with your child’s name and grade.
Halloween Walk This Friday: Reminders
A heartfelt thanks to all who have signed up to help with the Halloween Walk thus far, especially those who no longer have children in the early childhood classes.

Reminders:
Children in the nurseries and kindergartens will participate in the Halloween Walk on the morning of Friday, October 29. Please be discreet when talking about the Walk around your children as this is intended to be a surprise. We are grateful to all who have helped with preparations.

If you signed up to deliver food or props, please drop them in the café (under the microwave table) on Wednesday, October 27 or by 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, October 28. If you are not able to get here until after 2 p.m. on Thursday, October 28, please bring food and props directly to the gym. Large items and tools may be left outside under the fire escape to the left of the building. Be sure to clearly label any item you want returned, and plan to pick it up immediately after the Walk.

On the day of the Walk, we will have several farm animals here on school grounds, so please leash your dog from 8:30 a.m. until noon that day. If you are wondering how to be involved, we still need help. Please call the coordinator Kristin Bray at 617-308-1467.
Congratulations!
Please join us in welcoming Luana Preston's new grand-daughter, Ella Preston Hubner, born to Molly Preston Hubner (Class of 1997 and Waldorf High Class of 2001) early yesterday morning, Wednesday, October 20. Ella was 6 lbs 10 oz at birth and 19 1/2" in length, healthy and beautiful. Mother and child are doing well.
Come Dance at the Viennese Ball
Dust off your dancing shoes and join the Eighth Grade in a night of dancing, socializing, and German treats. The Viennese Ball will be held Friday, November 5, from 7-10 p.m. in the Waldorf School of Lexington auditorium. We are looking forward to seeing you at this elegant and festive event!

“The Waldorf high school curriculum consciously aims to nurture and encourage adolescent ideals, and to satisfy longing for meaning in the world and self, and for a sense of importance. It seeks with clear intent to avoid (and if necessary to heal) the destructive habits of mind and spirit so common among young people today.”  From “The Waldorf High School: Keeping Ideals Intact” by David Sloan (to read the full article, go to: Keeping Ideals Intact).

You can view more information about Waldorf High School in the latest Comet Calendar, October 2010.
News from Homespun
Are you hunting for that perfect costume or accessories for your costume? Come see the twisty wands and staffs, crowns, wings and capes of all colors, and all the equipment for a knight (even shields you can paint yourself).  The tins of Halloween postcards are now 20% off while supplies last.

The well stocked display of kitchen utensils are perfect for that little someone to share in the delight of cooking. The leaf rakes will entice helpers to gather the leaves that are falling down. The wooden handled jump ropes are a wonderful addition to your repertoire of outside games and the brand new stilts are sure to be a hit. The elegant beeswax candles are perfect for your fall table and make a wonderful hostess gift.

Drop-In Crafts
This week's drop-in craft activities are Making Lanterns and Needle Felted Critters

Come join other parents on Tuesday and Wednesday from 8:30 to 10:45 a.m.  Come learn how to make golden yellow lanterns and tin lanterns, perfect for the November Lantern Walk or for just welcoming in the dark days of the winter.  On Thursday from 8:30 to 10 a.m. we will be making needle felted critters.
