The Waldorf School of Lexington Parent-Child Education offers two transitional programs: Sweet Peas and Buttercups. Both are designed to gently ease young children into school life and the joy of learning in a peer group, with the support of their parents or caregivers. We envision these programs as a bridge between our Morning Glories Parent-Child Program and the family's first formal school experience in our nursery or kindergarten classes. Parents and children are supported with extra care in these transitional classes: They may attend Buttercups with their child for the first few months, until the children are ready to attend on their own. In Sweet Peas class, parents generally remain in the classroom throughout the year. Parent evenings focusing on child development issues are held in early September and then regularly throughout the school year. The curriculum follows the seasonal rhythms of the world of nature. Daily activities include bread making, circle games and songs, storytelling, puppetry, crafts, outdoor play such as gardening and sledding, and a healthy snack, which the children help to prepare. There are approximately 10 children in a class with two teachers. Some children at age three are ready for our Nursery Program, which offers two, three, and five-day options.
