It’s time to turn another page on the calendar (we hope to have The Waldorf School’s own wall calendar available very soon) and suddenly it will be October and fall will really be here, whatever the temperature. If you are planning to head out for some apple picking, stop by Homespun and pick up a child or adult-sized fruit basket to take along.
We don’t like to rush the seasons at Homespun, but perhaps you are someone who thinks ahead. If you are planning a Halloween costume for your little ones, you will soon find butterfly and fairy wings, Beatrice Potter masks, face paints, silk costumes for dragons, unicorns, mermaids & knights, and other ‘dress-up’ items in the store. Seasonal candles, including beeswax jack-o-lanterns and a range of autumnal fruits, squash, and acorns will join all sizes of beeswax pillars (some decorated with flowers) and tapers.
Another shipment of one-of-a kind gourd bowls and fairy houses by Diana Boyle is on its way. If you have not yet ‘entered’ one of these fairy abodes, you must come by and take a peek. Homespun has a fresh batch of colorful, wonderful felt balls, made by Waldorf parent and craftsperson Carol Ryan. You will find a lovely new ‘toy’ - a musical marble tower – more new cards, including favorites by class teacher Helena Niiva and crafts made by several of our current students.
Homespun will be open on Saturday, October 13 from 10 AM to 2 PM, during the East Lexington Fair. We also will be open on Sunday, October 21 from 1 - 4 PM, during The Waldorf School Open House.
On The Bookshelf
This week, we list books for children 2-3 years of age.
Parenting books (recommended by our faculty):
Beyond the Rainbow Bridge by Patterson and Bradley
You are Your Child's First Teacher by Baldwin-Dancy
Storytelling With Children by Mellon
Work and Play in Early Childhood by Jaffke
Children of this age love stories from their parents' own life experience and imagination, as well as stories with lots of repetition. Some lovely gentle stories (all available in Homespun) include:
The Runaway Bunny, Any Room for Me?, Pumpkin Moonshine, The Princess in the Forest, In the Land of...(series), Goodnight Moon, Grandfather Twilight and The Story of the Root Children.
