Organic Farm Shares |
 |
|
|
As you may know, the school kitchen uses organic products wherever financially feasible, and we are happy to announce it has purchased two winter shares of organic vegetables from Brookfield Farm in Amherst, MA. We get two 30 lb. deliveries per month, December through March, at a very good price. They still have a few shares available for families that are interested. Visit their website for more information. |

What a piece of work is a man! how noble in reason!
how infinite in faculty! in form and moving how
express and admirable! in action how like an angel!
in apprehension how like a god! the beauty of the
world! the paragon of animals!
(The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark. Act II, Scene ii. William Shakespeare)
Seventh Grade presents a new time in the development of the child. The students are reaching the age of thirteen and a new phase in their lives as teenagers, and yet still live in the world of the child. It is a year of new discoveries about all aspects of life, and this is reflected in the rich curriculum of Seventh Grade.
Two of the blocks, while seemingly quite different on the surface, interconnect in an interesting way. First, we have the block on the Renaissance. The Seventh Grade learns about new science, new ideas, and new art that came along with this age of rebirth. A central image to this time period was the human body—Leonardo da Vinci studied the physical body both from a scientist’s perspective as well as an artist's. Michelangelo’s David is a crowning symbol of the perfection of the human body.
The related second block that celebrates the human body in seventh grade is the physiology block. Here the students learn about the human body itself, and about the way all the parts and systems fit together to create a whole. The students are also taught the importance of nourishment in all forms and how “responsibility for oneself includes respect for the other.” Through experience and observation, they are able to learn how their own bodies are examples of the perfection captured so long ago by an artist’s eye. |

Annual Giving Campaign |
 |
|
|
Feel good about giving! The 2009-2010 campaign is well under way toward our family participation goal of 100% and our financial goal of $100,000 plus. While our family participation rate is a little low (only 15% so far), we are delighted to report that we have achieved over 43% of our financial goal in gifts and pledges. The Development Committee is optimistic that our January activities will help us surpass our goals early in the new year. As you know, the Annual Giving Campaign helps us cover the gap between the operating cost of the school and the tuition revenue, which is our primary revenue source. Annual Giving helps us fulfill our many missions, providing programs and resources that we simply can not afford on tuition revenues alone.
The looming tax year end of December 31 may motivate some families to participate now, rather than in the new year. Don't make the mistake I made last year of waiting a few days too long, and missing out on your April tax break.
Many thanks to this year's Development Committee and friends who have helped so much in building an outstanding development program for the school: Keith Hartt, Elisa Elkin Cleary, Miguel Canizares, Carol Damm, Laurel Kayne, Tabitha Nash, and Jenny Stirling, with the able support of Holly Kania and Joe O'Regan.
