This Week at the Waldorf School of Lexington

Bob Mendenhall was a cellist, poet, and teacher who was the director of the music program at the Waldorf School of Lexington for several years. He realized that students could only develop meaningful, lasting relationships with music and their instruments if they had access to private lessons. The relationship a student has with his or her private teacher is unique, but the skills learned in lessons can be broadly applied across their lives: discipline and patience in learning, confidence and risk-taking, emotional expression through an art, and systematic problem-solving.
The Mendenhall Music Scholarship Fund was created to honor his memory and his desire for as many students as possible to have this opportunity; it benefits many children at our school who otherwise could not afford private music instruction. This fund has helped make possible over a thousand lessons on violin, viola, bass, flute, clarinet, recorder, and trumpet since its inception in 2003.
Every spring, faculty, students, alumni, and parent musicians take part in a labor of love by putting together the Annual Robert Mendenhall Memorial Concert, which is always an exquisite showing of musical talent and passion. The proceeds from this concert go to the Mendenhall Music Scholarship Fund, which means that everyone who attends is helping to support and continue our successful music program.
Tickets for the 6th Annual Robert Mendenhall Memorial Concert will go on sale next week. Look for an invitation and ticket order form in your mailbox, inbox, and/or at Homespun. Save the date for Saturday, March 13 at 7:30 p.m. at the Follen Community Church. Donations to the fund in addition to ticket purchases are warmly accepted. Please contact Leah Bartell  with any questions.

Coffee House Tonight!

Come to the Coffeehouse tonight at 7:30 p.m.!  In addition to our usual welcoming open mic setting and tasty treats, we will be celebrating Rudolf Steiner’s birthday! We’d like to invite the adults in our community to come with their instruments and their voices to share their musical talents with each other. Even if you just want to hear some great music, please come along. Middle school students are also encouraged to join in. The evening is geared toward adults and older students but younger children who are able sit quietly with their parents and listen are welcome to come.

Annual Giving

Momentum is continuing, and the Development Committee is pleased to report that overall family participation jumped from 24% to 30% over February break, with over $60,000 dollars raised to-date. The Shining Stars kindergarten class is setting a high bar for other classes to follow, with a whopping 81% of families committing to a gift. Thanks to all community members who have given: your leadership is inspiring others. For those among us who have not yet participated, please help us meet our dollar and participation goals by making a gift or pledge in March; our 2010 Phone-a-thon for Annual Giving will take place on Sunday, March 7. Board Members and Development Committee Members will be calling to remind you of just how important your participation is. To pledge online, click here. To make an online gift, click here. The school counts on annual giving dollars in the 2009-2010 budget to support essential items. Thank you for your support.
