Breaking News!

We have just received very exciting news for our school. An anonymous donor, who has a deep belief in our school's mission and potential, has stepped forward to offer two generous matching challenges to help us reach and even surpass our Annual Giving goals for this year.  To read more about it and how you can participate, please follow the link below.

This Week at the Waldorf School of Lexington

One of the major goals of the fourth grade Waldorf curriculum is to channel positively the powerful energy which ten-year-olds bring to the classroom. Students need to be challenged and stretched in their various aspects of work. The teacher aims to meet the growing interest of the children in more concrete areas of knowledge and to provide them chances to show independence in their efforts. The narrative content of the lessons aims to respond by offering stories in which a multiplicity of personalities contributed to the social whole—particularly the Norse Myths stories—and in which darkness and evil becomes more concrete.   (from Educational Tasks and Content of the Steiner Waldorf Curriculum)

We saw an example of the playful and confident individuals in our own Fourth Grade this week as they worked together in their rousing production of Thor Triumphant. Thank you to all involved—it was enjoyed by all!

Mendenhall Concert Tickets

We hope you are planning to join us on Saturday, March 13 at 7:30 p.m. at the 6th Annual Robert Mendenhall Memorial Concert! You can order your tickets online by using the link on the News and Events tab on the homepage of the website, or by clicking here. (Tickets purchased online cannot be guaranteed until payment is received.) Ticket order forms are also available in the Main Office, Homespun, and the Business Office.

Mendenhall Refreshments

Please consider, in addition to attending the Mendenhall Concert, bringing refreshments for the reception which follows. We are in need of sweet and savory baked goods (homemade or purchased) such as tarts, quiches, and fancy desserts; packaged crackers and cheese; fruit platters; and strawberries and grapes.

We ask that parents bring the items (ready to serve on a platter) to the kitchen on Friday, March 12, to be stored in the refrigerators here at school. Thank you very much for considering contributing to this terrific event! Please contact Carolyn Dittes  or Lynn Nowels  to let them know what you would like to bring.

Learning Differences and the Challenges of Our Time

Childhood is more challenging than ever. The path of development for children is more varied and in some cases more rocky. What can parents do to aid this generation in their growth as human beings? Our school doctor, Rodd Stockwell, MD will outline the problems and the solutions in the light of modern and ancient wisdom in his lecture on “Learning Differences and the Challenges of Our Time,” at the school next Wednesday, March 10 at 7:30 p.m.  Click here for the link to an informational flyer.

Grandparents' Tea

This lovely annual event on Friday, April 30 invites grandparents for a taste of Waldorf education. Our guests visit their grandchildren’s classrooms, enjoy light refreshments, and have the opportunity to hear a faculty member speak about our pedagogy, with a period of time set aside for questions and answers about Waldorf education. The next morning is our May Day festival, to which grandparents are also welcomed. If you would like us to invite your child’s grandparents for this year’s grandparent’s tea, please send an email to Holly Kania . Indicate your guests’ names, mailing address, email address, and phone contact.

Annual Giving Update

Development Committee is pleased to report that overall family participation jumped from 30% to 38%, with over $60,000 dollars raised to-date. Thanks to all community members who have given: your leadership is inspiring others. For those among us who have not yet participated, please help us meet our dollar and participation goals by making a gift or pledge in March; our 2010 Phone-a-thon for Annual Giving will take place on Sunday, March 7. Board Members and Development Committee Members will be calling to remind you of just how important your participation is. To pledge online, click here. To make an online gift, click here. The school counts on annual giving dollars in the 2009-2010 budget to support essential items. Thank you for your support.
