Q: Why is Annual Giving necessary? Doesn’t tuition cover the cost of a student’s education?
A: Tuition does not cover all of the annual costs of educating students. Unlike public schools, which are funded by tax dollars, independent schools rely solely upon tuition and philanthropic gifts to meet operating and capital expenses.
The qualities we value most about a Waldorf education—dedicated, well-trained faculty; a comprehensive curriculum that includes core academics, the arts, movement, and special programs; high standards for student achievement and engagement; individual attention to student learning; a diverse community; and a beautiful campus—are all expensive to maintain. Waldorf School of Lexington, like all independent schools, relies on tax-deductible contributions every year to help meet these expenses.
Q: Why not raise tuition if it doesn’t cover all the costs?
A: Hefty tuition increases would make the school increasingly inaccessible to many families, yet would not eliminate the need for annual giving. Even schools with substantially higher tuition rely on charitable donations to help fund operations, programming, and future enhancements.
Q: Why is participation in Annual Giving important?
A: The school’s financial strength depends on the support of all its members. Your participation generates enthusiasm and encourages others to join you in supporting the school. Participation is a key indicator to foundations and corporate donors that we have consistent support from those we serve, both past and present.
Q: Who is asked to contribute?
A: We ask all members of our community—the Board of Trustees, current and former parents, alumni, faculty and staff, grandparents, and friends—to support Annual Giving.
Q: How much should we contribute?
A: We ask everyone to make a tax-deductible gift to Annual Giving that best represents their giving ability. No amount is too small to make a difference—or too large!
Q: Are these gifts tax deductible?
A: Yes. Gifts to non-profit educational institutions like the Waldorf School of Lexington qualify as charitable contributions and can be fully deducted.
Q: Can I contribute by credit card or with
appreciated securities?
A: Yes. You may pay with a credit card or transfer appreciated securities to Waldorf School of Lexington. Credit card gifts can be set up as one-time payments or as recurring monthly installments.
Q: Can I pledge a gift and pay later?
A: Yes, pledging a gift may allow you to give at the level you want, and you can pay your pledge before
the end of the financial year (June 30).
Q: Can my employer match my gift?
A: Greater Boston is full of companies who generously match their employees’ charitable donations. If you work for a company with a matching program, please consider enhancing your annual commitment to the school by filling out the necessary paperwork and submitting it to Joe O’Regan.
