| Main Lesson in the first grade |
Children begin their day with a morning greeting and an affirming handshake from their class teacher. During the two-hour Main Lesson that follows, the teacher presents the day's subject matter holistically, seamlessly integrating art, music, movement, and storytelling into the study of history, science, geometry, or literature.
Subjects that need constant practice, such as mathematics or reading, are taught regularly during the remainder of the day along with a rich array of disciplines including Spanish, German, chorus, orchestra, handwork, woodworking, eurythmy, and physical education.
From first through eighth grade, the class teacher ideally stays with the children from year to year. Thus, student and teacher develop a relationship based on mutual respect and a profound understanding of the child's needs.
