Celebrating Lunar New Year

Last week, we hosted our all-school Lunar New Year celebration. The festivities started with dedicating time for students and adults alike to participate in a unified cleaning of the school. From sweeping floors and scrubbing desks to tidying boots and coats, the whole school community pitched in for a portion of an afternoon to sweep out the old and make ready for the new.

Mandarin classes for students in grade 1-8 were focused over the last several weeks on preparing artwork and practicing performances for this much anticipated celebration. The artwork is currently on display in the school’s main hallway as part of our Lunar New Year Gallery and will remain through February 24.

On Friday, the whole school enjoyed a festive assembly where students in grades 1–8 performed for their classmates, Kindergarten students, parents, caregivers and grandparents—bringing everyone together for a joyful learning experience. From simple clapping games and short skits to Tai Chi and a Ribbon Dance, the sound of happy celebration rang out from the Auditorium, capped by a procession with a Chinese Dragon.

Waldorf education uses world languages to develop an understanding of varying languages, cultures and countries. This encourages the development of human understanding and expands awareness of cultural experiences. Students, faculty and staff alike, enjoyed this window into Chinese culture.
